Autumn is everywhere.
Just home from my autumn weekend. All things accomplished. Thrifting (amaaazing finds), wandering with the pup. A riverbed stroll with my Dad. Bites of fresh apples. De-stressed. Invigorated. Reignited. Filled with wonderment, curiosity, and hope.
This is a view of the street from the front porch.
This is what you see if you walk off the porch, in to the yard a bit, and look up.
This is the bridge we use as a shortcut to visit neighbors, across McClure Creek.
This is the view of our little Berghaus as you come up the road.
'Shrooms.
A daytime moon.
Mostly green tomatoes.
A river walk with Pa and Pup.
Pigeon River.
For some reason, I took pictures of my feet a bit:
My feet on river rocks.
My feet near the creek.
My personal favorite, my feet on my favorite reading rock.

Beyond.
Today's poem on The Writer's Almanac is just beyond.
"The Past"
by Nin Andrews
If she closed her eyes, she could see it
in the dark room of her mind,
the jukebox of her soul
developing so slowly,
she especially liked the way
he said the word, blouse,
when he unbuttoned her
silk blouse, blue blouse, flowered blouse,
his favorite one was pink
and hung on a green lamp
like a flower on a stem
now that he was gone,
and so was she
and no one lived there anymore,
the town kept lighting up without them
as if it were the first dusk.

On hightailing it.
Tomorrow after work I'm making my escape. I'm packing up the pup and heading towards the Blue Ridge Mountains with an hours-long mix of "Music for Melancholy: A Mountain Drive." Hours of songs to make one ponder. To try to make head and heart connect. To reason with reason.
Once I'm there, I'm unplugged. From computers and cable, from city noise, from everyone. I'm going overboard on piles of books, bonfires, and down blankets. I'm going to find hidden treasures in dusty country junk shops and pick the perfect apples.
Sometimes it's good to run away and hide, whether in a mountain valley shack or under the covers, to shut out the world and listen to the sound of your own breathing.

It is the birthday of the poet I love most.
"We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit."

BESTIE x BESTIE!
OK...so everyone who spends a bit of time with me knows how obsessed I am with Marcel (the Shell with Shoes On). Dean Fleischer-Camp, the same guy who did the camera/editing for that, worked with Jenny Slater of recent SNL fame (and more importantly, the voice of Marcel the Shell) and her platonic life partner, Gabe Liedman, on "Bestie x Bestie." I can't wait for more of these.

"They have medium/OK personalities and neither one eats bugs. They've never seen each other naked."
Thanks, VSL, for the tip.
Edited to add:
I just found this from the trio. Hilar.

Afterwards.
The best one came down for a long weekend:
* Mexican food and dive bar trivia
* morning vinyasas and coffee on a sunny patio
* Goodwill expeditions, where I dug up some great finds for seek vintage, including an amazing 1980s Ungaro dress, navy blue Stuart Weitzman heels, a cute short-sleeved button down (for my soon-to-be-launched guys' section of seek), and a bunch of other cute finds that I'm keeping for my own closet.
* late-night noodles and champagne (girl dates are the greatest)
* an early walk with pup and pal, down to the Ashley River
* fun, adventure, and chainsaws at Kulture Klash
* brunch at Rue de Jean
* a Sunday stroll down King Street, where no cars were allowed all afternoon
* a little non-thrift shopping that netted me the most beautiful navy blue beaded dress, worthy of the shimmiest flapper, and this incredible linen coat
In other news, here are some things I enjoyed today:
"Would Hemingway Cry?" in the New York Times' Modern Love
"Marilyn and Her Monsters" in Vanity Fair

Too.
I've gone weeks and weeks without having written anything of significance on the blarg, while at the same time my paper journal is being filled with pages of crossed-out scribblings.

I LOVE FASHION WEEK.
All images of Milan Fashion Week by the talented Tommy Ton for GQ.
Military, gray, trenches, denim shirts...looks just as good (if not better) on the men as the ladiez. Also, I hope people keep wearing Ray-Bans forever.

Beautiful things for a Friday.
I loved this movie. There's one scene in particular that I just want to watch on loop.

Amiina. So much beautiful music comes from Iceland.
