Do songs ever haunt you?

limited edition print (of 50) from hunting bears. buy me one. please.

This song follows me everywhere. When I saw blog posts from Mixed Plate and A Cup of Jo on prints of Smiths songs done as vintage Penguin covers, it freaked me out because this particular song hovers in the back of my mind (and often the front) very frequently. I need this. Or at least I want it real, real bad. Apparently prints relating to songs are my thing, lately.

A new project.

The Sketchbook Project: 2011

Amanda was telling me about this project and I think it's pretty fantastic. You sign up (there's a $25 fee) and pick a theme. Then you get sent a blank sketchbook and have until January 15, 2011 to fill the pages. After that, the books will go on tour (Portland, ME; Brooklyn, NY; Washington, DC; Atlanta, GA; Winter Park, FL; Chicago, IL; Austin, TX; Seattle, WA; San Francisco, CA) and people will be able to view them. Each sketchbook will receive a barcode so that creators can track their sketchbooks as they travel across the country, seeing when and where their books are viewed.

I think this project will be a great way to reignite those creative parts of my brain that have been getting dusty with disuse. Let me know if anyone else signs up--it would be fun to know that we're all in this together.

According to Wikipedia: "...their first show was a performance of the posthumous Otis Redding record The Immortal Otis Redding in its entirety." WHAT. Where can I see this?

I am beyond words.

MR. LINDEN'S LIBRARY

He had warned her about the book.
Now it was too late.

One of my favorite books as a kid was The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris van Allsburg. A series of images only accompanied by a title and a line of the relating story--they left you dreaming all day. I can't believe this book was written the year I was born; it's still as interesting and eerie as when it was first published.

Years later, in middle school my English teacher brought that same children's book to class. We each had to pick an image and write a short story to accompany it.

That's where my love of words and invoking moods began. That's where it took root. In books first, then through pen on paper.

Things that charm me today.

* Asian plum white tea...I'm addicted
* Another adorable illustrated Missed Connection
* Printable vintage ephemera
* MGMT's "Kids" covered on ukuleles.
* "I love you more than all the stars" decal...makes me want a chalkboard wall, too.
* These blue wingtips...I love vintage-looking men's footwear
* Today's "Writer's Almanac" was perfect. Wesley McNair's poem "Waving Goodbye" was sad and gorgeous--the end, especially:
Yet in that moment
before she and all the others and we ourselves
turn back to our disparate lives, how
extraordinary it is that we make this small flag
with our hands to show the closeness we wish for
in spite of what pulls us apart again
and again: the porch light snapping off,
the car picking its way down the road through the dark.

Eugenio Recuenco

I'm kind of beyond words today, so instead I'm offering the images of Eugenio Recuenco:

Lush, cinematic, striking.

Color studies.

Karen Myers, besides being the executive director of Redux, creates art that I want to hang on every wall of my house.

Here are a few of my favorites from her portfolio:

Hunting, 2007

Reading "Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs," 2007

Red Socks, 2008

Untitled, 2008

Klimt Study #1, 2007

Her paintings and mixed media are so layered with colors and textures and visual interest. Love it.

BAFTA posters

The BAFTA poster for An Education, illustrated by Tavis Coburn, is so cool. This film and anyone in it (especially Carey Mulligan) has my vote for any and all film awards.

Bloomin' walls.

Chrysanthemum I, giclée print on canvas, by Kevin Poole

On gray, rainy days like today, I want to cover my walls with bright paintings that remind me of Spring.
